Chinese women are focusing more on economic status than academic records when it comes to choosing a spouse, Xinhua News Agency reports. This was shown by a survey conducted by Qian Mingyi, a psychology professor with Peking University, who sampled 131 lonely-hearts ads in Chinese women's magazines published between 1985 and 2000. In 1985, 73 per cent of the women wanted would-be husbands to have good academic achievements; while in 2000, the percentage dropped to 29 per cent. On the other hand, in 1985, only 42 per cent of the women cared about a man's career; while in 2000, the number surged to 65 per cent. Professor Qian said that Chinese women have become more realistic about their marriage since they care more about a man's future than his current condition. Meanwhile, the poll also reflects that academic records have failed to translate into economic status and future prospects; Qian said. |
