New Year sounds good!

Beijing Weekend

Beijing's New Year promises a feast for the ears on the city's stages.

A series of colourful New Year concerts staged by classical troupes and orchestras should offer something for everything.

After co-staging a concert with the Beijing Symphony Orchestra this week, the London Symphony Orchestra is to feature in a New Year concert on January 1 at the Great Hall of the People. The programme includes Enigma Variations by Edward William Elgar, Carmen by Bizet, excerpts from The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart, La Traviata by Verdi, and Romeo and Juliet by Charles Francois Gounod, as well as Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 5.

China National Symphony Orchestra is to perform a symphonic concert on January 10 at the China National Library Concert Hall (Tel: 8854-5501). Lead by its resident conductor Li Xincao, they will play Leonore Overture No 2 by Beethoven, Violin Concerto in D Major by Brahms, Symphony No 5 by Schubert.

China Philharmonic Orchestra (Tel: 8838-4156) is to stage its New Year Concert on January 2 in Poly Theatre, highlighting Les Preludes by Liszt, The Pines of Rome by Ottorino Respighi and opera excerpts.
